Arizona's desert climate brings pests that many other states never see. Scorpions turn up in homes, and both subterranean and drywood termites damage houses here. Because some of these pests can be dangerous or costly, it pays to hire a licensed company that knows local conditions.
Common pests in Arizona
The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension writes about these pests for Arizona homeowners.
- Scorpions. Scorpions live in nearly every habitat in Arizona, from mountaintops to the desert floor. Of the species found here, only the bark scorpion is considered life-threatening. It climbs rather than burrows, and it can become a household pest in newly built areas and rural homes. Clearing boards, woodpiles, rocks and debris away from the house and sealing gaps around doors helps keep scorpions out.
- Subterranean termites. Extension calls subterranean termites major urban pests throughout the state. Watch for mud tubes on foundations and walls. See our page on termites.
- Drywood termites. In parts of Arizona, drywood termites are a significant and costly pest. They live inside dry wood and leave small, hard pellets below the spots they're eating.
Who licenses pest control companies in Arizona
The Pest Management Division of the Arizona Department of Agriculture licenses businesses and individuals who do structural pest control, the work done in and around homes and buildings. The department runs an online license search with separate lookups for pest control businesses and for individual applicators.
How to check a company before you hire
- Look up both the business license and the license of the technician who will come to your home.
- For termites, ask whether they found subterranean or drywood termites and what evidence shows it. The two are treated differently.
- For scorpions, ask what the company will do besides spraying, such as sealing entry points and advising you on clearing debris near the house.
- Get the treatment plan, the number of visits and any warranty in writing.
- Read reviews from other Arizona customers. If you've hired a company, you can write a review, and you can read how reviews work on our site.
