Michigan homeowners deal with ticks that are spreading across the state, mosquitoes in late summer and bed bugs that travel in with luggage and furniture. Any company that applies pesticides for hire in Michigan needs a state business license, and its applicators must be certified or registered.
Common pests in Michigan
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services follows these pests and the diseases some of them carry.
- Blacklegged ticks. This tick spreads Lyme disease, which the state says is spreading across Michigan. The tick is well established in parts of the Upper Peninsula and has moved north along the Lake Michigan coast and into other parts of the Lower Peninsula. See our tick and flea companies.
- Mosquitoes. Michigan health officials track eastern equine encephalitis, a rare but serious illness that mosquitoes can spread to people in the state. Removing standing water around your home cuts down on breeding spots. See mosquito control companies.
- Bed bugs. The state describes bed bugs as experts at hiding, with flat bodies that fit into the smallest spaces. They usually call for a professional. See bed bug companies.
Who licenses pest control companies in Michigan
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, often called MDARD, licenses pest control businesses. A company must hold a pesticide application business license to apply pesticides for hire, and the license has to cover the type of work it does. Each employee who applies pesticides must be a certified applicator or a registered technician. The MDARD business license page explains the rules and links to the state's directory of businesses licensed in Michigan. The applicator certification page covers individual technicians.
How to check a company before you hire
- Find the company in the MDARD directory of licensed businesses, and ask whether the technician coming to your home is certified or registered.
- Ask which pest they found and what treatment they recommend, including where they will apply it and how long you should stay off treated areas.
- Ask how many visits the job needs and what happens if the pest comes back.
- Get the plan, the price and any warranty in writing before work begins.
- Read reviews from other Michigan customers, and write a review of your own after the job. Learn how reviews work on our site.
