What to know about pest control in New Hampshire
Ticks and mosquitoes can spread serious illness in New Hampshire, and carpenter ants are among the pests most likely to damage the house itself. Anyone who applies pesticides on someone else's property in New Hampshire must hold a state commercial applicator license.
Common pests in New Hampshire
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services and UNH Cooperative Extension describe these pests in the state.
- Blacklegged ticks. Formerly called deer ticks, they spread Lyme disease, the most common tickborne illness in New Hampshire, along with anaplasmosis, babesiosis and Powassan virus. Ticks are most active from April to November but can be out on mild days in any season when the ground is not covered by snow. See our tick and flea companies.
- Mosquitoes. Mosquitoes in New Hampshire can carry eastern equine encephalitis, a rare but serious virus, and West Nile virus. See mosquito control companies.
- Carpenter ants. UNH Extension says carpenter ants and termites are the most troublesome structural pests in New Hampshire. They strongly prefer damp wood, and removing old stumps and storing firewood away from the house help prevent problems. See ant control companies.
Who licenses pest control companies in New Hampshire
The Division of Pesticide Control, part of the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets and Food, handles testing and licensing for pesticide applicators. Anyone who applies pesticides on another person's property, such as controlling pest insects, must be licensed as a commercial applicator. Pest control businesses must also meet the division's requirements for licensed firms. The rules are on the division's pesticide licensing page. We did not find a public online license search, so call the Division of Pesticide Control to confirm a license.
How to check a company before you hire
- Ask for the company's firm license and the commercial license of the technician who will treat your home, and confirm both with the Division of Pesticide Control.
- Ask what pest they found and what proof they saw. For carpenter ants, ask where the nest is and what moisture problem may be drawing them in.
- Ask what the treatment involves and what you need to do before and after.
- Get the plan, the number of visits and any warranty in writing.
- Read reviews from other New Hampshire customers, and write a review after the job. Learn how reviews work.
