What to know about pest control in Tennessee

Tennessee's warm, humid summers suit termites, ticks and spiders, and fire ants have moved into much of the state. Tennessee also has a clear rule for pest control companies. Any business that applies pesticides for hire needs a state charter, so checking a company is easier than in many states.

Common pests in Tennessee

University of Tennessee Extension and state agencies point to these pests as common concerns for Tennessee homes.

  • Subterranean termites. The most common termites in Tennessee are native subterranean species. Their winged swarmers usually fly on a warm day after a rain, and UT Extension recommends a professional termite inspection at least once a year.
  • Brown recluse spiders. UT Extension says the brown recluse is found in nearly every county and is far more common in the western half of the state. It hides in dark storage areas in closets, garages, basements and attics.
  • Imported fire ants. The Tennessee Department of Agriculture keeps all or parts of many counties under a fire ant quarantine, and it expands the area as the ants spread north.
  • Ticks. The Tennessee Department of Health says ehrlichiosis, spread by the lone star tick, was the most reported tickborne disease in the state in recent surveillance. The American dog tick spreads Rocky Mountain spotted fever here.

Who licenses pest control companies in Tennessee

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture licenses pest control in the state. Its page on certification, licensing and charters explains that a company offering pesticide application for a fee must hold a pest control charter for each business location. Each charter must have at least one licensed applicator for every type of service the company offers, such as termite work or general pest control.

How to check a company before you hire

  1. Look for the company's charter number on its vehicles and advertising. The department has long told consumers this number should be visible.
  2. Ask the technician for a state applicator certification or license card.
  3. Call the department to confirm the charter is current if you have any doubt.
  4. Ask which pest was found, how the treatment works and how many follow-up visits are included.
  5. Get the plan and any warranty in writing, and read reviews from other Tennessee customers. Our page on how reviews work explains how we moderate them.
